Oceanic Pathways of an Active Pacific Meridional Overturning Circulation (PMOC)

چکیده
In contrast to the modern-day climate, North Pacific deep water formation and a meridional overturning circulation (PMOC) may have been active during past climate conditions, in particular Pliocene epoch (some 3–5 million years ago). Here, we use model simulation with robust PMOC cell investigate pathways of from subduction upwelling, as revealed by Lagrangian particle trajectories. We find that similar present-day Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), most subducted upwells Southern Ocean. However, roughly 15% tropical Indo-Pacific Oceans instead—a key feature distinguishing AMOC. The connection Indian Ocean is relatively fast, at about 250 years. slower (∼800 years) first travels subtropical South then gradually through thermocline.

Active Pacific meridional overturning circulation (PMOC) during the warm Pliocene
An essential element of modern ocean circulation and climate is the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), which includes deep-water formation in the subarctic North Atlantic. However, a comparable overturning circulation is absent in the Pacific, the world's largest ocean, where relatively fresh surface waters inhibit North Pacific deep convection. We present complementary measure...
متن کاملPacific Shallow Meridional Overturning Circulation in a Warming Climate
By analyzing a set of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3) climate model projections of the twenty-first century, it is found that the shallow meridional overturning of the Pacific subtropical cells (STCs) show contrasting trends between two hemispheres in a warming climate. The strength of STCs and equivalently the STC surface-layer transport tend to be weakening (strength...
متن کاملAtlantic Dominance of the Meridional Overturning Circulation
North Atlantic (NA) deep-water formation and the resulting Atlantic meridional overturning cell is generally regarded as the primary feature of the global overturning circulation and is believed to be a result of the geometry of the continents. Here, instead, the overturning is viewed as a global energy–driven system and the robustness of NA dominance is investigated within this framework. Usin...
متن کاملChanges in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Introduction: the concept of the MOC Climate models project a slow down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) in the twenty-first century. This slow down is expected to affect climate over Europe. In particular, it damps the temperature rise due to the emission of greenhouse gases. The MOC is associated with the thermohaline circulation (ThC), which is the large-scale ocean c...
متن کاملThe Zonal Dimension of the Indian Ocean Meridional Overturning Circulation
The three-dimensional structure of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the deep Indian Ocean is investigated with an eddy-permitting ocean model. The amplitude of the modeled deep Indian Ocean MOC is 5.6 Sv (1 Sv 10 m s ), a broadly realistic but somewhat weak overturning. Although the model parameterization of diapycnal mixing is inaccurate, the model’s short spinup allows the effe...
